The format of the number itself
Every NIE reads the same way: an opening letter — X, Y or Z — followed by seven figures and a closing control character, such as Z-7654321-B. The sequence is generated by the Spanish National Police and stays bound to you permanently.
Leave the country for a decade and return, and the same NIE is waiting for you; it is never reissued or reassigned. EU nationals see it printed on a green registration certificate, while citizens from outside the bloc carry it on their TIE card.

Why an old formality became a genuine hurdle
There was a time when a morning visit to a comisaría produced a NIE before lunch. Those days are gone. In Mallorca the volume of applicants now dwarfs the appointments (the "cita previa") that the authorities publish, the EX-15 form is unforgiving of errors, and the correct government fee — Modelo 790-012 — has to be settled before you ever arrive.
