NIE
Número de Identidad de Extranjero — the lifelong identification number Spain issues to every foreigner with ties to the country.
TIE
Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — the laminated photo-ID residence card that non-EU residents must hold.
Cita previa
The compulsory advance appointment without which most Spanish public offices will not attend to you.
Empadronamiento
The act of registering on your municipality's roll (the padrón) at your address in Mallorca.
EX-15
The official form used to apply for the NIE.
EX-17
The official application form for obtaining the TIE.
Modelo 790-012
The tax slip on which the government fee for the NIE or TIE is paid.
Autónomo
A self-employed worker registered with both the Spanish tax authority and social security.
Número de soporte
The support reference (IXESP) printed on your certificate or card, used to verify your identity online.
NUSS
Número de la Seguridad Social — the social security number that connects you to public healthcare and pensions.
Autorización de regreso
A temporary permit allowing re-entry to Spain while your residence card is expired or being renewed.
Padrón
The municipal register of inhabitants maintained by each island town hall (ayuntamiento).
Remote NIE filing
Applying for the number from outside Spain through a private company such as Gestoraz, instead of attending an appointment in person at the Palma office.
